通常多くの人々にはない、教育者ならの体験を私は享受しています。
・自分は年齢を重ねているにもかかわらず、私の周りにいる人々はどんどん若くなっていく
・たくさんの違う文化背景を持つ若者と接することができる
・日本訪問の特権を持ち、最近四回目の訪問を果たしたばかり。
それを通して日本の文化に触れることで、今晩この場にいる若者の勇気、勇敢さ、決意を理解することができる
ICETは、日本からの若者をオーストラリアあるいは西欧社会に導入し、そして、一回りも二回りも大きく成長してどこか違った若者を再びまた日本社会に送り戻すことに成功しているユニークな教育プログラムです。生徒たちは、英語を流暢に操り、国際性を培い、そして、もっと学習したいという意欲を持っています。
原田先生、ギャビン先生、マニング先生、コロコシアン先生、そして、梅井先生の力に寄るものであり、賞賛されるべきことです。
私は、ここにいる生徒たちを直接教えてはいませんが、でも、彼らの勇気と物事を貫き通す精神に心からの共感を覚えています。
日本に行ったことがある人々は、文化の違いを感じるでしょう。静けさ、清潔さ、秩序、伝統、宗教、いずれをとっても、文化が極めて対照的であることを感じます。
ここにいる生徒たちの物事を貫こうとする精神、そして、勇敢さは、とても偉大なものです。それがどれほどに深いものであるかは、別の人々のコメントに委ねましょう。
日本人の生徒を歓迎し、教育者としてのプロの精神で生徒に接し、学習の土台を提供しているデイビッドソンのスタッフ全員に感謝します。また、愛とケアに満ちた大きな精神で生徒を受け入れ、彼らの教育に大きな貢献をしているホストファミリーにも賛辞を送ります。
つい最近、日本の東北部にある岩手日報の編集者が16カ国から集まった若者たちにたいへん洞察力のあるすばらしい挨拶をされました。その洞察の明瞭さは、驚くべきものです。そして、最後に言われたのが、「友情には国境がない」という言葉でした。
全部の名前は挙げられませんが、中国、ロシア、カナダ、ベトナム、アメリカ、韓国などからの生徒に囲まれていた私は、その言葉に大変感銘を受けました。そして、本当の友情というのは、得がたい宝物であることも理解しました。日本人の生徒たちが、新しい地において時に友だちを探すことに苦労することも理解しています。
私たち全員が理解しなければならないことは、ここにいる勇敢な若者たちが、私たちの生活をどれだけ豊かにしているくれるか、ということです。人生を豊かにしてくれるものは多様性であり、その多様性の豊かさを理解することであり、それが、学校や国家をより大きな目的にと向かって動かすものとなるのです。

As an educator, I am able to enjoy many experiences that most people don’t have.
- Even though I get older, the people around me seem to get younger.
- I am able to associate with young people from a variety of cultures.
- I have had the recent privilege of visiting Japan for the 4th time
and I am able to use my experience of Japanese culture to hopefully understand the courage, bravery and determination of these young people before us tonight.
ICET is a unique program in that it successfully integrates young students from Japan into Australian or western society and re-introduces them somewhat changed and broadened back into Japanese society. The students have a fluency in English, a new sense of internationalism and a hunger for learning more.
Ms Harada, Mr Gavin, Mr. Manning, Mr. Kolokossian, and Ms Umai are responsible for this and they should be applauded.
It should be said that I don’t teach these students but I have an innate sense of their courage and commitment.
Those of you who have spent some time in Japan will know how different the culture is – the quietness, the cleanliness, the sense of order, the traditions, the religion – all seek to paint marked contrasts between the cultures.
I will leave it to others to comment in more depth upon our students’ commitment and bravery for it is considerable.
I wish to thank the Davidson staff who welcome our Japanese students and provide such a professional and dedicated platform for learning. I also wish to congratulate the host families who I’m sure contribute their love, care and generosity of spirit to the successful education of each student.
I very recently heard the editor of the Iwate Prefecture News in northern Japan, address students from 16 countries and he gave one of those penetrating insights which never cease to amaze you with their clarity. At the end of his address he stated that “friendship has no borders”.
I was moved by the statement given that I was surrounded by students from China, Russia, Canada, Vietnam, the United States and Korea to name but a few but I also understand that genuine friendship in one of the hardest jewels to obtain. I know at times our Japanese students struggle with the concept of finding friends in a new land.
All it requires though is for all of us to understand how fortunate we are to have these adventurous students enrich our lives. It is the diversity that provides the interest in life it is the understanding of the richness of diversity which motivates a school or a nation to a greater purpose.
I wish to congratulate Riho, Asana and Yuki on the magnificence of their achievement.

ICETの新しいウエッブサイトのリリースにあたって、ICET出身のすべての生徒に私からの願いと挨拶のメッセージを送ります。多くの卒業生から 連絡があることは房枝先生から聞いているので、とても嬉しく思っています。最初の生徒たちがここにいたのがもう20年も前のこととはとても信じられませ ん。いろいろなことがありました、でも、ICETは未だ健在です。新しいウエッブサイトが、ICETを通過した生徒たちが経験や夢をシェアできるICET Familyの要の場所となることを希望します。
多くの卒業生についてのその後の様子がわかる一方、全く様子がわからない卒業生もたくさんいます。誰か一人がまた別の卒業生に一人でもいいから声を かけていったら、卒業生全員の近況がわかります。ぜひ、声かけをしてください。ICETがどんなことをしているのか、留学を希望する若者にもウエッブサイ トを覗くよう勧めてください。
それぞれが幸せな人生を歩んでいると思います。未来によりたくさんの幸運が訪れますよう。

On the occasion of the launch of our new website I would like to send my best regards and wishes to all the former students of ICET.
I know from Fusae-sensei that many of your remain in contact and I am always pleased to hear your news via her.
It's hard to believe that our very earliest students were here 20 years ago!! So much has happened in that time and yet ICET continues.
One of my hopes is that this new website becomes a focus point where the ICET family can share experiences and aspirations.
While we know what many of you are doing, there are others that we have no knowledge. If everyone undertook to pass the site news on to at least one other former ICET student then I'm sure we be able to reach everyone. The challenge is there!
It would be good if you could pass on the website and what ICET does to any prospective students as well.
I trust you are all happy in your lives and good luck in your futures!
